We are a group of adults with developmental disabilities living in the Denton County community who are dedicated to the concept of “self-determination” for all citizens.
As Self-Advocates, we speak up for ourselves and take responsibility for our own lives. We have the opportunity to make decisions and choices for ourselves, instead of having others make them for us. We learn about our rights and how to stand up for our rights.
We are one of 22 local chapters that are part of a nonprofit organization, the
Texas Advocates
. This organization was established in 1980 as a program of
The Arc of Texas
. In 1991, Texas Advocates became a separate organization with its own board of directors made up of people with developmental disabilities. The Texas Advocates work together and speak out for people with disabilities to make sure we all have equal opportunity to participate with dignity and respect as members in all aspects of community life.
Our chapter is co-sponsored by The Arc of Denton County and Denton County MHMR.
We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 7:00 – 8:30pm.
